Last night I managed to get a fourth bookcase for my bedroom. As I picked it out, my sister pointed out that it's a little, well, strange to have four bookcases (all double stacked) in a room that is only 10x12. I guess that yes, this may be a little strange BUT I need them. All of them. Let me explain.
I have a bit of an addiction. I am a compulsive reader, which in turn, makes me a compulsive book buyer. Some days I wonder if I single handedly keep Chapters in business. This addiction comes with a number of other issues - space, time and money are all quickly used up. My bedroom is more books than anything else. Even with all the bookcases, I still have piles of books - on top of and beside the bookcases, beside my door, next to my bed, on my nightstand - and that's only my bedroom. Last year I saved just over $72 on my irewards card - at between 5 and 10% a book, that's a lot of money. In fact, I spent $1000 of my student loan on books last year, and made due with shoes that had holes in them through the west coast spring. I still don't regret it.
So as I was putting away my books, it occured to my that perhaps I should keep track of the ones that I read, and how they affect my life. So here it is, my very first blog, dealing with my most expensive addiction: books.
Right now I am working on Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. I'm on number ... 14? It's called Men at Arms. This is the funniest series of books I have ever read. I keep looking around and seeing all kinds of funny things, mostly to do with the justice system at the moment. For those of you who haven't read this book, it centers on the Watch, the police force of Ankh-Morpork, who are a rather interesting crew. They have just recruited some new members.
Part of the reason I find these books so funny is that they build on each other. The series is not linear; in fact, there are sub-series within the series. The only two that have to be read in order are the first one (The Colour of Magic) and the second (The Light Fantastic). These two books provide the foundations the world is built on - a giant turtle walking through the universe with four gigantic elephants on which rests the discworld.
If anyone out there happens to read this and has any suggestions for a good book, please share them! I read anything and everything. Also, being that this is my first blog, if anyone has any advice on how to improve it I would appreciate it greatly.
