Recently the city passed an ordinance/law/rule thingummy saying trains can't use their whistles here in town. I think there's a six week grace period for the trains to get used to the idea, but already the sound of train whistles has noticeably decreased. I can understand the reasoning behind this change, but still it makes me sad. I always liked hearing them at odd moments--perhaps because it was usually only late at night, after everyone else around me was already asleep. I love night, and the train whistles quite simply seemed to belong, a secret only a few were aware of. Whatever the reason, and even though so many others appear to find them annoying, I will miss them.

train whistles
i HATE train whistles. They're loud, they last forever, and they always manage to wake me from a dead sleep.
Perhaps if I didn't live 5 miles from the track they'd be OK, like some haunting sound in the night.
But I do, they do, and I'm fed up. :)
My 2 cents.
