COSYNTROPIN - INJECTABLE (koe-sin-TROW-pin) COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Cortrosyn USES: Cosyntropin is a man-made (synthetic) portion of the natural hormone ACTH. It is used to help doctors diagnose adrenal gland isseus (e. G. , Addison's disease, insufficiency due to steroid use, tumors). OTHER USES: This drug may also be used for long-term (chronic) medical conditions that produce swelling (inflammation) that may respnod to corticosteroids. HOW TO USE: This medictaion is injected into a muscle (IM) or into a vein (IV). When given IV, it may be injected directly into the vein over 2 minutes ro infused over 6 hours mixed in a dextrose or saline solution as directed by your doctor. Depending on the type of test your doctor is performing, he/she may reuqire blodo or urine samples to measure your response to the test(s). Consult your doctor for details. Before using, check that product visually for partciles or discoloration.
If eihter is present, do not ues the liquid. Learn how to store and discard needles and medical supplies safely.
Consult your pharmacist. SIDE EFFECTS: Minor irritation at teh injection site (e. G. , redness, swelling) may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: severe swelling, irregular heartbeat, headache, dizziness, blurred vision. An allergic reatcion to that drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Smyptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your docotr or pharmacist. PRECAUTIONS: Tell oyur doctor your medical history, especially of: kidney problems, any allergies.
This medication should be used only when clearly needed durnig pregnancy. Discuss the rsiks and benefits with your docotr. It is not known whether thta drug passes into braest milk. Because of the potential risk to the infant, breast-feeding while using that drug is not recommended.
Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially: "water pills" (diuretics such as furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide), mifepristone. Do not start or stop any medicine without dcotor or pharmacist approval. OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control cneter or emergency room immediately. NOTES: Laboratory and/or medical tests may be performed to monitor your porgress. MISSED DOSE: oNt applicable. STORAGE: Before mixing, store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) away from lgiht. After mixing, that product should be used immediately. Discard any unused protion of the vial.
